Paddington (2014)

Director:

Paul King

Starring:

Ben Whishaw

Hugh Bonneville

Sally Hawkins

Julie Walters

Plot:

A young Peruvian bear travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kindly Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven.

Review:

What the hell man? What the hell? Why did it have to start that way? I haven’t read a Paddington book in years but I started reading one to my daughter a while ago and it most certainly did not start with the death of Paddington’s uncle all in your face. You know there are plenty of stories out there that don’t involve the death of a loved one pushing the hero to great heights.

Setting that aside the movie was really cute. Loved the family and the way the dad was portrayed. The contrast between when he went into the hospital with his pregnant wife and when he left was hilarious and really put the nail on the head regarding the before and after of kids.

Paddington holds a special place in my heart and I thought this movie was good enough not to tarnish any memories I held.

Tangled (2010)

Director:

Nathan Greno

Byron Howard

Starring:

Mandy Moore

Zachary Levi

Donna Murphy

Plot:

The magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.

Review:

This may cause some outrage, but, I think I like the story in Tangled better than Frozen. The songs are undeniably better in Frozen, but I think the character development is better in Tangled and makes the story that much better.

The songs are fine in this movie, they just aren’t as catchy as the ones in Frozen. I’ve seen Tangled a few times, but I couldn’t sing any of the songs or even really tell you what they’re about.

I cried a couple times, which is normal for a Disney movie, and each time my daughter would give me a hug, which was awesome.

Genesis Rodriguez

James Cromwell

Alan Tudyk

Plot:

The special bond that develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax, and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.

Review:

What is with Disney and making me bawl? I swear, I knew at the beginning that the brother and Baymax were going to die, and I just cried even harder because of it. Disney has a death toll as high as George R. R. Martin. It’s starting to annoy me.

Loved the world that was created. Not sure why I’ve been noticing worlds so much, but I have, and I really liked this one. It kind of reminded me of Meet the Robinsons in the way that it felt like anything was possible.

There was a nice diverse cast of characters. The smart scientists weren’t just boys, they had girls, for my little girl to want to be like. I like that Disney thinks of those things. I know some people think that it’s very commercial, but at least they try and tic all the boxes.

The story was good, though, predictable. Hated the mad scientist and told my husband, as tears were streaming down my face, that I wanted to kill that son of a bitch. Because of him Hiro lost his brother. At least he was able to recreate Baymax.

Anyway, while I didn’t enjoy this movie as much as Frozen, I thought it was really cute and definitely worth owning.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman (2014)

Director:

Rob Minkoff

Starring:

Ty Burrell

Max Charles

Stephen Colbert

Ariel Winter

Plot:

The time-travelling adventures of an advanced canine and his adopted son, as they endeavor to fix a time rift they created.

Review:

The movie started off very cute. Wasn’t too fond of the middle because Penny, Ariel Winter, was a real bitch. The ending was another negative. It’s like they couldn’t figure out what to do and they said, “Fuck it, it’s a kids movie, nothing matters.”

I felt cheated. The beginning was good and really cute, but then Penny was just too bratty, and then the ending was just too stupid.

Sad.

Frozen (2013)

Frozen-characters

Directors:

Chris Buck & Jennifer Lee

Starring:

Kristen Bell

Josh Gad

Idina Menzel

Jonathan Groff

Plot:

Fearless optimist Anna teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

Review:

What is it with kids movies and making me sob like a little girl? It wasn’t quiet Pixar’s Up opening but it still had me in tears. Great story, love me some fairy tales. Glad that the ending wasn’t the predictable prince saves the day. I actually thought it might end up being Elsa saving the day but I liked that Anna ended up saving herself.

I am totally buying this and, I think, if my daughter ends up choosing this movie to watch every day forever I’d be ok with that.
