Merry Friggin’ Christmas (2014)

Director:

Tristram Shapeero

Starring:

Robin Williams

Joel McHale

Lauren Graham

Plot:

Boyd Mitchler and his family must spend Christmas with his estranged family of misfits. Upon realizing that he left all his son’s gifts at home, he hits the road with his dad in an attempt to make the 8-hour round trip before sunrise.

Review:

I should have realized this wasn’t going to be a lite, happy, Christmas comedy. The title should have clued me in but I was looking for something new that wasn’t overly sentimental and I thought this would be perfect. Instead it was super depressing.

This was one of Robin Williams last movies and that makes it all the more sad.

Fairly certain I didn’t laugh or even smile throughout. It was all about a screwed up family that was supposed to come together at Christmas or just overcome some of their issues but I didn’t feel like that’s what happened. Instead each new revelation about the dad just made me wonder why he was a part of anyone’s life.

Would not recommend if you’re looking for a good Christmas movie.

The Emperor’s Edge (The Emperor’s Edge #1) By: Lindsay Buroker

Plot:

The adventure starts here…

Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire’s most notorious assassin, is in town. He’s tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills… or someone wants her dead.

Review:

This was a nice follow up after reading the Aeronaut’s Windlass. It didn’t have quite the same fleshed out world that I was looking for, but I loved Amaranthe. She was so capable that I really enjoyed reading her. Some of the other characters were better fleshed out than others and I like that things didn’t work out completely perfectly in the end.

This was the first book in what I can see could be a very fun series. The fact that the next few books are already written is awesome too. No waiting for me!

Bad Moms (2016)

Bad Moms (2016)

Director:

Jon Lucas

Scott Moore

Starring:

Mila Kunis

Kathryn Hahn

Kristen Bell

Plot:

When three overworked and under-appreciated moms are pushed beyond their limits, they ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom, fun, and comedic self-indulgence.

Review:

I thought this was going to be a movie about a mom deciding to stop being “perfect” and that’s what it was mainly, but there was a whole side story about her getting a divorce and then an evil PTA mom that was just a huge downer. I get that there needed to be conflict but the dad was a total douche to the point where you couldn’t figure out why she’d ever been with him and the PTA mom was a conniving bitch. I also thought that Kunis let her kids walk all over her.

I wanted to like this movie so much and there were parts that I did, but overall I don’t get the hype. There was just too much side story negativity.

Oh and when she had sex with the one dude and he asked to go down on her again all I could do was roll my eyes. I kept waiting for her to wake up. It was too over the top.

The whole job thing was also really stupid too.

I really think the movie would have been better if it had been about real moms and not rich women. I feel like they missed out on so many stresses of motherhood.

Sweet Cinderella (Klaus Brothers #4) By: Penny Watson

Plot:

Just one night.

Hannah De Luca Andersen has been battered by the worst year ever, but even that can’t squash her love of the holiday season. She has one night to forget life’s hardships and enjoy the magic of an elegant Christmas gala. If she’s really lucky, maybe a handsome prince will ask her to dance.

Gregor Klaus, Director of Finance for Klaus Enterprises, has completely lost his Christmas spirit. One look at Hannah thaws his icy demeanor and gives him a new sense of purpose. If he can only figure out the key to Hannah’s heart, he might have the best Christmas of his life.

But one night isn’t enough for Gregor Klaus. He won’t be satisfied with anything less than forever.

Review:

This was a cute little Christmas romance that I cried throughout. I blame pregnancy hormones. I just couldn’t handle a widow with twin boys being swept off her feet by a burly, rich man that fell in love at first sight.

I hardly remember the other books in the series, but it didn’t matter. The other characters were there but you didn’t need to have read the others to understand what was going on. I’d still recommend reading in order, though, because there were nods you wouldn’t have picked up on.

Cute book and series.

Rocky II (1979)

Rocky II (1979)

Director:

Sylvester Stallone

Starring:

Sylvester Stallone

Talia Shire

Burt Young

Plot:

Rocky struggles in family life after his bout with Apollo Creed, while the embarrassed champ insistently goads him to accept a challenge for a rematch.

Review:

My husband has been trying to get me to watch this series for years and I have zero desire to watch it. Every now and then he catches me though and we’ve now finished the second movie.

I couldn’t watch the beginning because seeing Rocky be stupid with his money was just too much. It was horrible. Then any time Adrian, Talia Shire, came on the screen it was super awkward because she was so shy. Between the two characters it was difficult to watch.

The fighting didn’t really do it for me. The montage wasn’t as good as the first but it was probably the best part of the movie.

I feel kind of bad for rating this movie at all because I seriously had no desire to watch it but whatever.
