Ip Man 3 (2015)

Director:

Wilson Yip

Starring:

Donnie Yen

Lynn Hung

Jin Zhang

Mike Tyson

Plot:

When a band of brutal gangsters led by a crooked property developer make a play to take over the city, Master Ip is forced to take a stand.

Review:

It’s been a while since I watched the first Ip Man movies and all I really remember is that I liked them and that Donnie Yen was awesome.

Man I really hope they utilize him correctly in Rogue One. Please don’t screw that up.

Anyway, the last few fight scenes in this movie were great, the first ones were good as well just didn’t quiet do it for me. Maybe because Master Ip is supposed to be getting old but his punches didn’t have that much power, seemingly.

Didn’t like the story in this movie, it was way too emotional. I get that this is supposed to be about a real man’s life, but I could have done without the weepy story line. I don’t like crying when I watch an action movie.

I need to watch the other movies before I give any kind of order of preference, but more than likely this will be my least favorite.

Action Jackson (1988)

Director:

Craig R. Baxley

Starring:

Carl Weathers

Craig T. Nelson

Vanity

Sharon Stone

Plot:

Vengeance drives a tough Detroit cop to stay on the trail of a power hungry auto magnate who’s systematically eliminating his competition.

Review:

This was a Christmas gift to my husband so naturally I had to watch it. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was. Apparently Carl Weathers wanted to make a “modern day” blaxploitation film and this was it. I enjoyed the racial diversity and all the people set on fire.

Also, Sharon Stone and Vanity titties.

Actually seeing Vanity in the movie reminded me of The Last Dragon which then caused me to read her Wikipedia entry, which was interesting.

Carl Weathers was great. There was some kind of weird sculpture in the background of his apartment. Crag T. Nelson played a good bad guy, but a bad action bad guy.

Close Range

Close Range (2015)

Director:

Isaac Florentine

Starring:

Scott Adkins

Nick Chinlund

Caitlin Keats

Plot:

A rogue soldier turned outlaw is thrust into a relentless fight with a corrupt sheriff, his obedient deputies, and a dangerous drug cartel in order to protect his sister and her young daughter.

Review:

This was a surprisingly well directed low budget action movie. There was not an overabundance of shaky cam or quick cuts and the story wasn’t edited to the point of confusion. I think that it helped that there wasn’t much story, but that’s an acceptable route to go with an action film.

The movie starts off immediately with Adkins kicking drug cartel butt and it rarely slows down from there. Caitlin Keats even gets in on the action and is not completely a damsel in distress needing her brother to take care of her, so I really liked that.

Every time I see Adkins in something lately I wish he got more work in bigger budget things, even his own TV show could be awesome. In fact this movie was short enough that it could be like a pilot episode pitch.

Adkins is a rogue soldier falsely accused and just wants the world to leave him alone. Too bad his particular set of skills puts him in high demand. Unable to escape Adkins takes matters into his own hands and fights for the people that can’t fight for themselves.

You know, something like that.

Anyway, if you like action movies Close Range is worth checking out.
