The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

Director:

Guy Ritchie

Starring:

Henry Cavill

Armie Hammer

Alicia Vikander

Plot:

In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.

Review:

It’s interesting that Henry Cavill keeps playing Americans. I don’t have a problem with it, it’s just interesting.

Anyway, this movie should have been better than it was. Maybe it would have been if I hadn’t seen Kingsman or a James Bond movie. The chemistry between the actors was great, the story was interesting, but for some reason it went from trying to be a Spy movie to an action movie and it did the action bits poorly.

I don’t know what it was, maybe I just watched this in the wrong mood. I’d honestly love to see another movie with these same actors in these same roles, but something needs to change. Since it barely made back what it cost I doubt we’ll see a sequel, though.

It wasn’t a bad movie. It was entertaining and I enjoyed several aspects of it, but it wasn’t remarkable.

Close Range (2015)

Close Range

Close Range (2015)

Director:

Isaac Florentine

Starring:

Scott Adkins

Nick Chinlund

Caitlin Keats

Plot:

A rogue soldier turned outlaw is thrust into a relentless fight with a corrupt sheriff, his obedient deputies, and a dangerous drug cartel in order to protect his sister and her young daughter.

Review:

This was a surprisingly well directed low budget action movie. There was not an overabundance of shaky cam or quick cuts and the story wasn’t edited to the point of confusion. I think that it helped that there wasn’t much story, but that’s an acceptable route to go with an action film.

The movie starts off immediately with Adkins kicking drug cartel butt and it rarely slows down from there. Caitlin Keats even gets in on the action and is not completely a damsel in distress needing her brother to take care of her, so I really liked that.

Every time I see Adkins in something lately I wish he got more work in bigger budget things, even his own TV show could be awesome. In fact this movie was short enough that it could be like a pilot episode pitch.

Adkins is a rogue soldier falsely accused and just wants the world to leave him alone. Too bad his particular set of skills puts him in high demand. Unable to escape Adkins takes matters into his own hands and fights for the people that can’t fight for themselves.

You know, something like that.

Anyway, if you like action movies Close Range is worth checking out.

Grinch

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Director:

Ron Howard

Starring:

Jim Carey

Taylor Momsen

Plot:

A creature is intent on stealing Christmas.

Review:

Great IMDB plot synopsis. This is a nice, now classic, Christmas movie. Great message about the season and still applies. A really sweet song and Jim Carey at his most age appropriate. This is part of my yearly Christmas rotation and my daughter liked this version better than the cartoon.

Merry Matrimony (2015)

Director:

John Bradshaw

Starring:

Jessica Lowndes

Christopher Russell

Plot:

Brie, an advertising executive, lands her dream assignment organizing the perfect Christmas wedding for a fashion magazine. If she succeeds, she will make partner at her firm. The only catch is that she unknowingly has been paired up with a certain high powered fashion photographer who just happens to be her estranged ex-boyfriend. Stars Jessica Lowndes and Christopher Russell.

Review:

This movie was worlds better than the last one I watched, which isn’t saying much, but it does put it on tier with the rest of the Hallmark Christmas movies out there.

Lots of romance and definitely Christmasy, it was very cute. Brie loved Eddie, Eddie went to Paris for an amazing career opportunity, they lost touch. Seven years pass and neither has gotten over the other and their thrown back into each other’s lives. I never really get those stories, if you love someone as much as you’re saying then why’d you let them get away? Why did you not at least email?

Oh well. It was sweet.

The Night Before (2015)

The Night Before (2015)

Director:

Jonathan Levine

Starring:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Seth Rogan

Anthony Mackie

Jillian Bell

Plot:

On Christmas eve, three lifelong friends, two of whom are Jewish, spend the night in New York City looking for the Holy Grail of Christmas parties.

Review:

I love rated R Christmas movies, not sure why but I do. I liked The Night Before, but it wasn’t as good as the Harold and Kumar Christmas movie or even Four Christmases. I thought they should have eased off the serious stuff and just embraced the three friends going on one last crazy Christmas Eve before they accepted adulthood. That would have been funnier. Instead there was a steroids sideline and a whole getting over dead parents thing. The baby thing was actually funny, maybe they should have stayed that light and ridiculous with the other plotlines.

There were several funny moments and it was a nice holiday movie, but I felt like it could have been better.
