The Defenders (2017-?)
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist team up to fight crime in New York City.
I was excited for this to come out, even after the horrible Iron Fist that I was unable to complete. If I had known just how much of the plot revolved around Danny I would have tempered my expectations. Instead I spent most of the series rolling my eyes, ignoring large portions, and wishing someone would just kill him already.
What I noticed first was the different filters for each character. It was at best distracting and worse down right annoying. I’m not sure who thought that was necessary but I thought it was stupid.
By far the best part of the series was Jessica Jones, they did not deserve her. Her character was funny and I enjoyed it every time she was on the screen and allowed to talk. I feel like her part was the smallest but I’m not positive about that and would like to see a breakdown of the amount of time each character had on screen.
I enjoyed Luke Cage and Daredevil to a lesser extent, and again absolutely hated Danny. I’m not really looking forward to The Punisher and after this I’m concerned that they’ll find a way to screw up the second season of Jessica Jones. Time will tell, but once I watch Wet Hot American summer with my husband we’ll probably be canceling Netflix again.
The only reason I’m not giving this a one star is because there were more than a few instances of everyone treating Danny like an idiot and I appreciated that.
Robert De Niro
In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.
I remember when this movie came out. Not because of a trailer or poster or any kind of advertising, but because the $1.50 theater I worked at got it. That’s the only reason I knew it existed. I have no idea what the marketing department was doing with this one, but they really dropped the ball.
Amazing cast, stellar source material, and a great movie. It’s one of those movies I’ve watched so many times that I sometimes use it to fall asleep to, because I can close my eyes and see the story in my mind. Love it.
Even now as I scan the IMDB page the order of cast is crazy. Charlie Cox and Claire Danes are main characters but so is Michelle Pfeiffer and she is way down there. It’s just bizarre. At least she made the poster.
Anyway, it’s a beautiful, fanciful story that I highly recommend.
Side note- That dorky looking dude in the pic above is now Daredevil.
Deborah Ann Woll
A blind lawyer with his other senses superhumanly enhanced fights crime as a costumed superhero.
Best pilot since Marvel’s Agent Carter. So far I’ve consumed four episodes and I love this show so much. A lot of the fight scenes have been better shot than most action movies being released lately. The story is compelling and I like how they’ve worked in mentions to the Avengers. Not the characters but the destruction they did to the city. The characters are real, but not so real that you can’t see them donning black and kicking butt.
I purposefully didn’t read much about this show going in because I wanted to see it without any expectations, and these first four episodes have been incredible. I’m so looking forward to the rest of this season and all the Marvel+Netflix series to come.
Side note: Kind of sad to read that AKA Jessica Jones might not be released this year, it’s times like this when I’m reminded that we’re in a whole new world of TV and have no idea what “networks” are going to do
