The Good Place Season One (2016-?)

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Kristen Bell

William Jackson Harper

Jameela Jamil

Ted Danson

Plot:

A woman struggles to define what it means to be good.

Review:

Alright, so when this aired last year I wasn’t really interested in it. However, once the finale aired and I discovered what was going on it intrigued me and I figured why not. It’s currently on Netflix so it was a real quick binge and I ended up really enjoying it. I’m actually going to watch the second season as it airs on hulu.

Kristen Bell is hilarious and I’ve loved Ted Danson since Cheers, the actors I’m not familiar with were all great as well. Seeing Eleanor, Kristen Bell, someone who isn’t murderer bad, but who isn’t a good person try and become one is amusing. Even though she’s not someone the viewer would like based on flashbacks you start to root for her and she grows as a person.

Overall, liked the show and looking forward to the new season.

Timeless (2016-?)

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Abigail Spencer

Matt Lanter

Garcia Flynn

Malcolm Barrett

Plot:

An unlikely trio traveling through time to battle unknown criminals in order to protect history as we know it.

Review:

First, it’s a time travel show, I had to at least watch the pilot. Second, it started with an LBJ dick reference, how can you not like that? My biggest concern now is that I might like it too much which means it’s probably going to get canceled.

The way they handled time travel wasn’t groundbreaking, but that’s honestly what I want in a time travel show. I loved the fact that they came back to present day at the end and little things had changed, but only they knew about it. I liked Abigail Spencer’s character and Malcolm Barrett’s, but thought they were pushing it with Matt Lanter. I can suspend my disbelief that a pretty boy is delta force, but then he gets his ass handed to him in his first real fight and only survives cause a woman from the 30s jumps in with an iron skillet. Also, what little we know about his backstory so far is pretty cliché, all in all not my favorite character. Still, with all the time travel things could change, we’ll see.

Excited and hopeful but also cautious. In the past my favorite new shows were Almost Human and Limitless, not to mention a few other one season cancelations. Hopefully Timeless breaks the cycle.

Debra Messing

Laz Alonso

Josh Lucas

Janina Gavankar

Max Jenkins

Plot:

A single mom NYPD homicide detective cracks case after case while raising wild twin boys and locking horns with her less than helpful police detective ex-husband.

Review:

This is weird, but I’ve been looking forward to watching this show. Ever since I found out it was from the same production company as Arrow and Flash, etc… I wanted to try it out. Months ago one of those Netflix lists that says what’s coming and going said that it was going to be added, but it never showed up. It wasn’t until this month that during one of my random searches it appeared. I devoured the first season and wanted to watch the second, but could only find the last five episodes online. No idea what’s going on with this show and it’s lack DVD/Bluray or streaming ability, but I really enjoyed it.

Laura, Debra Messing, is a working mom and I feel like she captures everything wonderfully. She’s very capable and smart and has a lot of common sense. Those qualities work great in a detective so she’s awesome at her job. She’s also disorganized and raising twin boys, so her life is a mess.

The show is almost wish fulfillment in that all those women out there that like to watch detective shows and think “I could do that” get to see it done every week. Laura’s life is far from perfect though so it’s not a total “I want that life” sort of thing.

Good side characters, like the case per week formula, love the insights into her home life, and really like the boyfriend.

Heroes Reborn Mini-Series (2015)

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Jack Coleman

Gatlin Green

Ryan Guzman

Robbie Kay

Zachary Levi

Plot:

A year ago, a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas left the city decimated. Blamed for the tragic event, those with extraordinary abilities are in hiding or on the run from those with nefarious motives.

Review:

I think I would have preferred an outright reboot to a mini-series that picks up two seasons after I dropped the original show. Since I did stop watching around the beginning of the third season I’m not sure if things would have been clearer if I was up to date. I honestly planned on watching the first four seasons before this aired, but never got around to it.

With all the other superhero shows that I’m already watching Heroes Reborn was going to have to be pretty awesome for me to pick it up. Sadly it was more of the whole save the girl, save the world business. Maybe I didn’t like it because I wasn’t up to date, but I don’t think so.

The two hour season premiere asked a ton of questions, I think they were expecting me to already be invested in the world and want the answers, sadly I do not. There was also the horrible “video game” story line that was going on that turned me off as well. That part was set in Tokyo, why the hell didn’t they make it look like anime?

Whatever, if there’d been some new characters I was interested in I might have stuck around, but nobody really grabbed me. For a moment I thought maybe I’d watch it for Zachary Levi but I hated the character of his wife, she was just so guns blazing stupid. I will say I read a theory online that those two aren’t really married and based on the premiere I think that’s probably true.

I’m actually sad that I’m dropping this show, but I see no reason to stick around. This Fall season has been really rough, even my returning shows aren’t blowing me away. Maybe I’ve finally met my TV limit.

Plot:

A man struggling with his faith is haunted by the sins of his past but is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

Review:

I feel like I should really like this show but the pilot didn’t really grab me. I’m going to watch at least a couple more episodes before I make a final decision, but I’m concerned that it won’t make the cut. I really wanted to like this show and I can’t even pick out exactly why I didn’t like the pilot. Maybe I have Keanu Reeves stuck in my mind? I didn’t hate the casting though. I’m just not sure.
