A Legendary Christmas With John and Chrissy

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Chrissy Teigen

John Legend

Plot:

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen get into the holiday spirit with family and friends, including Darren Criss, Jane Lynch, Raphael Saadiq, Meghan Trainor, Awkwafina, Neal Brennan, Kim Kardashian West, Zach Galifianakis and many, many more.

Review:

Chrissy Teigen is smart, funny, and beautiful; and I’ve recently started spending more time on Twitter where she is queen. Since I don’t have cable I wasn’t sure if I would be able to watch her holiday special with her husband, John Legend, but I was excited to see it uploaded to Hulu.

So much fun! Of course, there was amazing holiday music, but it was also super funny. The mac and cheese focus group had me screaming with laughter. Loved it!

Christmas music, laughter, family, and celebrity cameos, what more could you want from a holiday special? Highly recommend and I hope, maybe, it becomes a yearly tradition for them and all of us.

Superstore Seasons 1-3 (2015-?)

Network:

NBC

Creator:

Justin Spitzer

Starring:

America Ferrera

Ben Feldman

Lauren Ash

Colton Dunn

Nico Santos

Mark McKinney

Nichole Bloom

Plot:

A look at the lives of employees at a big box store.

Review:

When this show first came out a few years back I had no desire to watch something based in a Big Box store. Just was not my cup of tea and did not sound appealing. However, recently, I found myself looking for something to fill the time before Fall TV and there it was waiting.

The first two seasons were highly amusing. I loved how capable but prone to the wrong reaction Amy, America Ferrera, was. I enjoyed how easy to mock Ben Feldman was. I love Dina, Lauren Ash. Garrett, Colton Dunn, messing with people was hilarious. The store manager was even played well by Mark McKinney and I usually dislike the religious character.

Then season three happened. When binge watching you notice things that you don’t necessarily notice watching a show like “normal.” The very heavy Office parallels started to really be evident to me and then they changed Amy to be significantly less competent and much heavier on the more negative side of her personality. It wasn’t as pleasant to watch, though I understand why they went that way. She’s recently divorced in not in a good place emotionally.

I’m hoping that season 4 is a return to normal, but considering she’s pregnant with her ex-husband’s child, who knows. It’s frustrating when a character I loves devolves.

I Feel Bad (2018-?)

NBC

Creator:

Aseem Batra

Starring:

Sarayu Blue

Paul Adelstein

Madhur Jaffrey

Plot:

Emet, the perfect mom, boss, wife, friend and daughter, is learning to be okay with being imperfect.

Review:

I love network comedies because they are usually pleasant background noise. I can tune in and out and be entertained. ‘I Feel Bad’ works perfect for that, and I found myself tuning in way more frequently that I normally would.

I enjoyed that this is about a working mom that’s in a good marriage has a close relationship to her parents and is also a person of color.

I do foresee some issues with her job. She is an artist for a video game company, if it’s depicted realistically it could end up being too real. Of course, if it doesn’t at least mention the issues facing that industry right now I’d be even more disappointed. We’ll see what happens.

The supporting cast were entertaining and I enjoyed the two episodes I’ve watched. We’ll see if it ends up being more like Blackish or if it fizzles and burns.

The Good Place Season One (2016-?)

The Good Place Season One (2016-?)

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Kristen Bell

William Jackson Harper

Jameela Jamil

Ted Danson

Plot:

A woman struggles to define what it means to be good.

Review:

Alright, so when this aired last year I wasn’t really interested in it. However, once the finale aired and I discovered what was going on it intrigued me and I figured why not. It’s currently on Netflix so it was a real quick binge and I ended up really enjoying it. I’m actually going to watch the second season as it airs on hulu.

Kristen Bell is hilarious and I’ve loved Ted Danson since Cheers, the actors I’m not familiar with were all great as well. Seeing Eleanor, Kristen Bell, someone who isn’t murderer bad, but who isn’t a good person try and become one is amusing. Even though she’s not someone the viewer would like based on flashbacks you start to root for her and she grows as a person.

Overall, liked the show and looking forward to the new season.

Timeless (2016-?)

Timeless (2016-?)

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Abigail Spencer

Matt Lanter

Garcia Flynn

Malcolm Barrett

Plot:

An unlikely trio traveling through time to battle unknown criminals in order to protect history as we know it.

Review:

First, it’s a time travel show, I had to at least watch the pilot. Second, it started with an LBJ dick reference, how can you not like that? My biggest concern now is that I might like it too much which means it’s probably going to get canceled.

The way they handled time travel wasn’t groundbreaking, but that’s honestly what I want in a time travel show. I loved the fact that they came back to present day at the end and little things had changed, but only they knew about it. I liked Abigail Spencer’s character and Malcolm Barrett’s, but thought they were pushing it with Matt Lanter. I can suspend my disbelief that a pretty boy is delta force, but then he gets his ass handed to him in his first real fight and only survives cause a woman from the 30s jumps in with an iron skillet. Also, what little we know about his backstory so far is pretty cliché, all in all not my favorite character. Still, with all the time travel things could change, we’ll see.

Excited and hopeful but also cautious. In the past my favorite new shows were Almost Human and Limitless, not to mention a few other one season cancelations. Hopefully Timeless breaks the cycle.
