Marvel’s Inhumans (2017-?)

Network:

ABC

Starring:

Anson Mount

Serinda Swan

Ken Leung

Plot:

An isolated community of superhumans fight to protect themselves.

Review:

If you’ve seen the trailer you already know that this show isn’t going to be any good. I have no idea what ABC and Marvel were thinking, but here it is. If you have to watch superhero stuff, I guess you’ll have to watch this too. First episode was about as good as NBS’s Emerald City, maybe worse. I will probably end up hate watching this because it’s so short, but then again, I might not. Who knows?

Review:

So here’s the thing, I’m a fan of Wonder Woman. I’m not an uber fan, but I still love her. I have no faith in DC Movies, when I saw the first few trailers for this movie I was not impressed. They looked like the movie was going to be just like Man of Steel and not care about the character at all. When the last trailer came out, though, I got excited. It was bright and colorful and Gal Gadot kicked ass. Then when everyone started raving about how amazing it was I got even more excited. Maybe that just built up my expectations, I don’t know, but I ended up being disappointed by the film.

My main complaint was the CGI, there was too much of it and it was bad. Not quite SyFy movie bad, but close. It took me out of the movie every time it appeared, which was during all of the fight scenes. There’s a moment when WW is coming out of the trenches and you’re supposed to be excited because she’s about to show everyone just how amazing she is, but all of a sudden she’s on a green screen, her make up is heavier, her hair is blown out, and it just ruined the entire moment for me. I don’t understand why they had to do that, Gal Gadot should be able to do the action scenes, they shouldn’t have to resort to computers. It was sad.

Robin Wright was amazing, I wish there’d been more of her.

Chris Pine was fine, I’m glad his character died though. I also felt like their “love” just sort of came out of the blue. I could have done without them having sex, but whatever, I kind of got the vibe that she was just using him to test it out and I was fine with that. But then he’s heading off to do his thing and telling her about his feelings and then at the end of the movie she’s all moony about him and it annoyed me. They literally made her fall in love with the first man she’d ever seen. It was frustrating.

I wasn’t even going to mention her theme music, but I kind of feel like I have too. Her theme is fine, I don’t have a problem with it. What I do have a problem with is that it comes out of nowhere in the movie. The entire thing you’ve had boring unremarkable background music and then all of a sudden you’ve got electric guitars, or whatever that was, playing. It was jarring and took me out of the moment. The music should have boosted the emotional response I was feeling at the time, it shouldn’t have made me stop thinking about the movie and think about the music.

Wonder Woman was easily the best DC movie, but the bar was not high. Maybe if I’d gone in with my original expectations it would have been fine and I would have enjoyed it more, but after all the buildup I expected more. Renting these movies at Red Box and not buying them is going to be my continued stance.

Side Note: After reading my review I feel kind of bummed and want to end it on a high note. Gal Gadot was perfect as Wonder Woman. This was the first DC movie where I felt like they actually understood the character, Wonder Woman felt properly represented. However, my issue and the reason for the rating, is because of everything else. I hope these things are fixed in the sequel, but I’m not going to hold my breath because I have no confidence in DC.

Logan (2017)

Logan (2017)

Director:

James Mangold

Starring:

Hugh Jackman

Patrick Stewart

Dafne Keen

Plot:

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X somewhere on the Mexican border. However, Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.

Review:

A violent, indie Wolverine movie. I enjoyed the violence and language, but if they were going to be indie I wish they’d embraced it more. Wasn’t a fan of the ending, and not just because of the deaths, I wish they’d gone Children of Men and just ended it.

It was nice to see this Logan, and I liked the world expansion, but is it ever going to be expounded on? Or are we left with just that?

Too many questions and not enough answers.

Dave Bautista

Plot:

Review:

I was very lucky to have my parents visit us last week and while they were here my husband and I were able to go on a date. Naturally, we went to see a movie and thank goodness this was still in theaters.

I loved the first Guardians of the Galaxy and everything I saw trailer wise told me this one was going to be as good as the last. Thankfully, we were not disappointed.

I laughed more with this movie than the last, Drax, Bautista, is freaking hilarious. I did think a couple of the more emotional scenes went on too long and I actually cried at the ending.

Honestly, I really liked this movie and I’m looking forward to buying it when it comes out so I can watch it again.

Also, I need a baby Groot.

Starring:

Grant Gustin

Candice Patton

Danielle Panabaker

Plot:

After being struck by lightning, Barry Allen wakes up from his coma to discover he’s been given the power of super speed, becoming the Flash, fighting crime in Central City.

Review:

For the first half of the season I watched episodes about a week or so after they aired on my DVR, then we got rid of cable and I had to watch them online on CWs website. Eventually I couldn’t take that anymore and I decided to wait until they were up on Netflix.

I don’t know if it was the waiting in between episodes or maybe watching shows like Silicon Valley and Westworld that made me unable to really get back into enjoying The Flash. It was cheesy, but took itself way too seriously, and the story felt like the same thing they’ve been telling over and over. Plus the whole Iris is going to die thing felt like it was dragged on forever and I just wanted it to be over and didn’t care what happened.

I dropped Arrow earlier in the season because I wasn’t enjoying it anymore, I know everyone else thinks it’s a return to the glory days, but I just didn’t like it. I think, and this makes me sad to say, I think I’m going to drop The Flash too. That leaves me with just DC Legends of Tomorrow because I dropped Supergirl after the first episode of the second season.

Maybe I’ll watch the crossovers. Not sure. Is this the end of an era for me?
