Backstrom (2015-?)

Network:

Fox

Starring:

Page Kennedy

Beatrice Rosen

Rainn Wilson

Genevieve Angelson

Dennis Haysbert

Plot:

Backstrom, the renowned misanthropic police detective, takes on new and daunting cases.

Review:

I like Rainn Wilson from watching him on The Office so I tried this out. Pretty disappointed. There was nothing that really stood out. It’s a lot of familiar tropes and while I like how gruff and insensitive Wilson is he didn’t have any positive qualities. I kind of like a good quality or two. He did have a kid living with him that could either be his son, or more than likely his father’s bastard child, but I didn’t get the feeling he did it out of any kind of goodness,

The supporting cast didn’t give me a reason to watch either.

With all the other good shows out there this one just doesn’t make the cut.

Tammy (2014)

Tammy

Tammy (2014)

Director:

Ben Falcone

Starring:

Melissa McCarthy

Susan Sarandon

Kathy Bates

Plot:

After losing her job and learning that her husband has been unfaithful, a woman hits the road with her profane, hard-drinking grandmother.

Review:

I’m glad that Melissa McCarthy is getting roles in comedy movies, but Tammy left a lot to be desired.

The plot makes it sound like a raunchy comedy with a grandmother and granddaughter, but it doesn’t deliver. I’m not sure if McCarthy just wasn’t given free rein or if she was having a series of off days, either way I didn’t laugh once. There were too many emotional parts and relationship revelations and not enough comedy. The main jokes were just about how disgusting Tammy was and I’m getting tired of those jokes. I hate when comics pick one thing and harp on it forever, like Kevin Hart and being short. Get over it.

Look at a Will Ferrell comedy or the better Adam Sandler movies, when they have a deep, meaningful, revelation it doesn’t take up half of the movie and a lot of the time they come to the wrong realization. Why can’t a female driven comedy do that? Why do they actually have to grow? Why do they have to make themselves “pretty”?

When Ricky Bobby has to find himself he goes about it in the most ridiculous ways and it’s hilarious because he’s doing it all wrong and he doesn’t know any better. When Dewey Cox gets his life together it’s just a long montage with him playing catch with his billion kids.

Tammy spiraled out of control, but the entire time she knew what she was doing was wrong, and it wasn’t funny. It was sad, because she was too stupid to figure out other options and she knew it.

Her finding a man at the end didn’t bother me because they do that in male driven comedies as well, but I didn’t really buy him being in to her.

I had such high hopes and I think that made the movie worse, for me.

Pack of Lies (The Twenty-Sided Sorceress #3) By: Annie Bellet

Pack of Lies

Pack of Lies (The Twenty-Sided Sorceress #3) By: Annie Bellet

Plot:

Let sleeping dogs lie. Wolves, on the other hand… Recovering from a broken heart and coming to terms with her family history, all sorceress Jade Crow wants is to resume running her comic book store and gaming with her friends. With a town full of strange wolf shifters, a hundred-and-fifty-year-old peace accord hanging in the balance, and the Justice who broke her heart back in her life, Jade’s plans go out the proverbial window. Wolves are killing wolves, innocent human lives are caught in the crossfire, and not everyone in town is who they appear to be. As the bodies stack up and the doubts build, Jade and her friends race to find the true killer. And then Jade’s evil ex-lover makes another move…

Review:

So much going on in this book. Jade and Alek are having relationship hiccups, there’s a Japanese assassin after Jade, and about two hundred and thirty wolves are in town to select a new head alpha over all plus renew their Peace treaty. Wow. Definitely jam packed and something was almost always happening.

Jade is still practicing her magic and she’s getting back into her peak shape, magically. The people in town finally found out she’s a sorceress and the reaction has not been friendly. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

After that ending I was immediately online looking for the next book, even though it was one o’clock in the morning.

I never intended to post YouTube videos and I’m pretty sure I never will again, but these are just too awesome not to share.

The fighting is great, the lead is like a cross between Bruce Campbell and Jackie Chan, then there’s the addition of Groundhog Day, or in this case Edge of Tomorrow is a better example. There are moments of comedy intermixed while he learns how to beat up the Martial Arts Mafia and I love the fact that no one talks.

Anyway, it’s great and pertinent to my interests and hopefully the interests of my readers.

In the Blood (2014)

In the Blood In the Blood (2014)

Director:

John Stockwell

Starring:

Gina Carano

Cam Gigandet

Danny Trejo

Plot:

When her husband goes missing during their Caribbean vacation, a woman sets off on her own to take down the men she thinks are responsible.

Review:

Oh my god. Please do not waste your time on this movie. Please. I beg you. Don’t. Watch Twilight or CSPAN, but not this movie.

I really like Gina Carano but I’ve yet to see her in a movie that properly utilizes her talents. As in her fighting talents, cause she currently cannot act. That’s fine though, there’s a shortage of female action stars that can kick ass. Put her in a role where she beats the shit out of people.

This movie had some serious pacing issues. It was boring as shit and then a fight scene would happen and then it would be boring as shit again. The plot sounds interesting and if they’d done the usual action movie fare and skipped story it would have been fine. As in within the first ten minutes her husband is kidnapped and she goes on a rampage to find him. Think Commando. Actually go watch Commando instead of this movie.

There are several good reviews and it has a surprising rating of 5.8 on IMDB.com. I have no idea what movie these people were watching but it wasn’t this one. Maybe they fell asleep and woke up whenever shit happened. I don’t know, whatever the case go watch paint dry or something before watching this.

Also they thought they were being so witty with that title, but they weren’t. They were stupid. And that’s all I have to say about that.
