Network:

Fox

Starring:

Craig Robinson

Adam Scott

Ally Walker

Plot:

A skeptic is forced to work with a firm believer of the paranormal on unexplained occurrences in Los Angeles.

Review:

I waited until I’d watched the second episode to write my review because the pilot seemed really rushed, like it wanted to set everything up in the first thirty minute episode so that the rest of the season could be more focused. I’m not sure if it accomplished that goal, but the second episode was less rushed, however it still felt short. Maybe it’s because the concept as a comedy is new to me? I’m not sure.

The pilot had some funny moments, but it was mainly world and character building. The second episode was a bit funnier, but I still don’t think they’ve quiet hit their stride.

I love Craig Robinson and Adam Scott so even though I’m still unsure about this show I’m going to stick it out and hope it gets better.

Dark Matter Season 3 (2015-2017)

Dark Matter Season 3 (2015-2017)

Network:

SyFy

Starring:

Melissa O’Neil

Anthony Lemke

Alex Mallari Jr.

Plot:

In the dystopian 27th century, six people wake up on a deserted spaceship with no memory of who they are or what they’re doing there. They reluctantly team up and set off to find answers with the help of a female android.

Review:

Why do I even let myself get invested in shows these days? Nothing seems to ever get closure. Everything ends on a cliffhanger and worlds are always hanging in the balance.

I really liked Dark Matter, the crew was interesting, just the right amount of good vs bad. The tech was fun. The world was ruled by evil corporations. There was time travel and alternate dimesions. Seriously, the show had everything I loved and I really enjoyed it.

Kiss of death apparently.

Even though the third season ended on a cliffhanger it had one of my favorite episodes. They travel back in time and get to integrate into our society for an episode. It was fun.

There are a ton of unanswered questions, but even knowing it has been canceled I’ll probably go back and re-watch it because I enjoy it that much. Maybe one day I’ll learn my lesson and just stop watching TV all together.

Wonder Woman (2017)

Wonder Woman (2017)

Director:

Patty Jenkins

Starring:

Gal Gadot

Chris Pine

Robin Wright

Plot:

When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Review:

So here’s the thing, I’m a fan of Wonder Woman. I’m not an uber fan, but I still love her. I have no faith in DC Movies, when I saw the first few trailers for this movie I was not impressed. They looked like the movie was going to be just like Man of Steel and not care about the character at all. When the last trailer came out, though, I got excited. It was bright and colorful and Gal Gadot kicked ass. Then when everyone started raving about how amazing it was I got even more excited. Maybe that just built up my expectations, I don’t know, but I ended up being disappointed by the film.

My main complaint was the CGI, there was too much of it and it was bad. Not quite SyFy movie bad, but close. It took me out of the movie every time it appeared, which was during all of the fight scenes. There’s a moment when WW is coming out of the trenches and you’re supposed to be excited because she’s about to show everyone just how amazing she is, but all of a sudden she’s on a green screen, her make up is heavier, her hair is blown out, and it just ruined the entire moment for me. I don’t understand why they had to do that, Gal Gadot should be able to do the action scenes, they shouldn’t have to resort to computers. It was sad.

Robin Wright was amazing, I wish there’d been more of her.

Chris Pine was fine, I’m glad his character died though. I also felt like their “love” just sort of came out of the blue. I could have done without them having sex, but whatever, I kind of got the vibe that she was just using him to test it out and I was fine with that. But then he’s heading off to do his thing and telling her about his feelings and then at the end of the movie she’s all moony about him and it annoyed me. They literally made her fall in love with the first man she’d ever seen. It was frustrating.

I wasn’t even going to mention her theme music, but I kind of feel like I have too. Her theme is fine, I don’t have a problem with it. What I do have a problem with is that it comes out of nowhere in the movie. The entire thing you’ve had boring unremarkable background music and then all of a sudden you’ve got electric guitars, or whatever that was, playing. It was jarring and took me out of the moment. The music should have boosted the emotional response I was feeling at the time, it shouldn’t have made me stop thinking about the movie and think about the music.

Wonder Woman was easily the best DC movie, but the bar was not high. Maybe if I’d gone in with my original expectations it would have been fine and I would have enjoyed it more, but after all the buildup I expected more. Renting these movies at Red Box and not buying them is going to be my continued stance.

2/5

Side Note: After reading my review I feel kind of bummed and want to end it on a high note. Gal Gadot was perfect as Wonder Woman. This was the first DC movie where I felt like they actually understood the character, Wonder Woman felt properly represented. However, my issue and the reason for the rating, is because of everything else. I hope these things are fixed in the sequel, but I’m not going to hold my breath because I have no confidence in DC.

The Good Place Season One (2016-?)

The Good Place Season One (2016-?)

Network:

NBC

Starring:

Kristen Bell

William Jackson Harper

Jameela Jamil

Ted Danson

Plot:

A woman struggles to define what it means to be good.

Review:

Alright, so when this aired last year I wasn’t really interested in it. However, once the finale aired and I discovered what was going on it intrigued me and I figured why not. It’s currently on Netflix so it was a real quick binge and I ended up really enjoying it. I’m actually going to watch the second season as it airs on hulu.

Kristen Bell is hilarious and I’ve loved Ted Danson since Cheers, the actors I’m not familiar with were all great as well. Seeing Eleanor, Kristen Bell, someone who isn’t murderer bad, but who isn’t a good person try and become one is amusing. Even though she’s not someone the viewer would like based on flashbacks you start to root for her and she grows as a person.

Overall, liked the show and looking forward to the new season.

Splatoon 2

My 10 Year Anniversary present from my husband

Splatoon 2

Publisher:

Nintendo

Developer:

Takaya Imamura

Platform:

Switch

About:

Splatoon 2 is a team-based third-person shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the sequel to the 2015 Wii U title Splatoon, and is playable by up to eight players in online four-versus-four matches.

Review:

This has been my most anticipated game in a long while. The original Splatoon was a huge surprise and I ended up loving it. I’m not sure if I’ve ever been so competitive while playing something online but I was literally screaming curse words at the TV.

At this point I’ve put in sixty plus hours in Splatoon 2 and I haven’t even ventured into the story mode. I spent the majority of my time playing Turf Wars then I discovered Salmon Run and things got obsessive. Salmon Run is not available at all times, which can be annoying, but I also think I ended up playing more because of it. For a while each time it was available I would login to play and get the two big bonuses. While playing Salmon Run you don’t level up, but you can make a killing money wise.

Turf Wars will always have my heart, though. I’ve really enjoyed the new maps and I wish some of the old maps that are available weren’t. I’m looking at you Moray Towers. The new weapons have been fun to try out, but the aerospray is and will always be my default weapon. It’s weaker than a lot of the other weapons, but it just lays down so much ink. I haven’t unlocked the gold aerospray yet, but I’m looking forward to it.

I’ve played Ranked Mode a few times and each time I do horrible. I don’t have the time or patience right now to really dedicate to getting good so I steer clear of it, for now. One day the kids will pretty much take care of themselves, so come Splatoon 4 or 5 I’m going to fuck some shit up!

So far the only part of Splatoon 2 that I dislike is the matchmaking. I would like to be able to team up with friends easier during Splatfests. Why do I need to have four people to do that? During regular Turf Wars you can check your friend list and join whoever is available, which is perfect. It’s also difficult to join friends in Salmon Run, they have to create a room and you join that way. Basically there’s too much planning and communication involved in playing together.

I’ve played docked and handheld, I’ve used joycons and the pro controller, and my preferred combo is docked with the Splatoon pro controller. My husband prefers using the joycons separate because he’s able to use the motion controls to turn. When I’m able to get into the groove I have a blast playing. When I’m not able to, I still have a blast playing, I just feel like a huge burden on my team.

I really love this game, I love the colors, I love the game play, I love everything! The fact that I still have story mode to beat makes me so happy because it means even after so many hours I’m nowhere near done.
