Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

Director:

Stephen Chow

Starring:

Stephen Chow

Wah Yuen

Qiu Yuen

Plot:

In Shanghai, China in the 1940s, a wannabe gangster aspires to join the notorious “Axe Gang” while residents of a housing complex exhibit extraordinary powers in defending their turf.

Review:

After watching The God of Cookery I had to re-watch Kung Fu Hustle. Such a good movie. It starts pretty much immediately, tons of great action and it’s hilarious. Really I shouldn’t have to say more.

Let’s see. Stephen Chow is amazing, perfect timing, similar story line to The God of Cookery in that he experiences a redeeming moment and then does good. Great over the top scenes that are excellently shot. Really you couldn’t ask for more.

The God of Cookery (1996)

Director:

Stephen Chow

Lik-Chi Lee

Starring:

Stephen Chow

Karen Mok

Vincent Kok

Plot:

The most renowned and feared chef in the world loses his title of God of Cookery because of his pompous attitude. Humbled he sets out to reclaim his title.

Review:

The plot synopsis isn’t quite right. I don’t think he becomes humbled until the very end when a certain event happens. Just losing his empire wasn’t enough to do it.

This movie was crazy and I really enjoyed it. There wasn’t much food porn and only a few of the dishes seemed milding appetizing to me so I wouldn’t recommend this for someone looking for that, the focus wasn’t cooking it was like a kung foo version of a Naked Gun movie. Kind of lol.

It did feel a little dated, but only in video quality. I didn’t watch it dubbed, I prefer subtitles, so I don’t know how good the voice acting was. There were a few instances where they would zoom in on something written but there was no translation.

Overall I really liked the movie and it made me want to re-watch Kung Fu Hustle.

Jurassic Park III (2001)

Director:

Joe Johnston

Starring:

Sam Neill

William H. Macy

Téa Leoni

Plot:

A decidedly odd couple with ulterior motives convince Dr. Alan Grant to go to Isla Sorna (the second InGen dinosaur lab.), resulting in an unexpected landing…and unexpected new inhabitants on the island.

Review:

Stupid rich people. That’s kind of harsh, they were looking for loved ones, so I will excuse their actions. I would have potentially done the same thing. Well… I would have never let my loved one do something that stupid. Bunch of god damn idiots.

Why does everyone have to scream in this movie. I mean holy fucking shit people, how many times does it take for you to learn?

Didn’t like the pretty boy character because he was an idiot. I don’t think there’s a movie Téa Leoni has been in where I didn’t hate her character and this movie was no exception. So glad they finally went back to a good female character in the new one, tired of these idiots.

They were constantly hearing shit I couldn’t hear and I swear the volume was turned up so no idea what was going on with that. Maybe I’m going deaf in my old age, I hear twenty-nine is the new sixty.

Honestly, the movie is super underwhelming, especially after seeing the new one.

Mr. Mom (1983)

Mr Mom

Mr. Mom (1983)

Director:

Stan Dragoti

Starring:

Michael Keaton

Teri Garr

Fred Koehler

Plot:

After he’s laid off, a husband switches roles with his wife. She returns to the workforce and he becomes a stay-at-home dad – a job he has no clue how to do.

Review:

I’ve never seen this movie previously, but the concept seemed fun. Since it’s from the eighties I had no idea what to expect.

I could really relate to Michael Keaton’s character. I’ve been there, it’s not an easy transition from full-time employed business professional to house parent. You go from being able to at least see a paycheck for your work if not a sign of progress, to being home alone with a child that is completely dependent upon you for everything. The days run into each other and you start to feel helpless. It’s difficult.

Anyway, back to the movie. It was very dated, but still funny. Loved the progression of his beard and his defense of it. Thought his soap habit was funny and not for the first time wished I could get into a show like that.

I didn’t really get the ending, though. There was a lot of confusion with a ton of people being there. It seemed like he was going back to work for the same people that furloughed him and that his wife was quitting her new career. Things were basically going back the way they were. I wished there was a different resolution, though I’m not entirely sure what.

The wife could have sued for sexual harassment and they never would have to work again.

Jurassic World (2015)

Jurassic Park Lost World

Jurassic World (2015)

Director:

Colin Trevorrow

Starring:

Chris Pratt

Bryce Howard

Vincent D’Onofrio

Plot:

A new theme park is built on the original site of Jurassic Park. Everything is going well until the park’s newest attraction–a genetically modified giant stealth killing machine–escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.

Review:

Well I haven’t yet watched all the other Jurassic movies, I’m missing the third, but I don’t always get to see movies in theaters and I jumped at the opportunity to see this one.

First off, Chris Pratt is my new Hollywood crush. Dude is hilarious, smart, and sexy, so pretty much the entire package. Way to go Anna Faris for locking that down.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this film. It’s incredible that I could go from being terrified of the raptors in the first film and crying when they get hurt in this movie. I thought the dinosaur eating people action was great, though, the bad guy could have gone out better and the way they took out the babysitter seemed a bit over the top.

The kids were nowhere near as annoying as the kids from the first two movies. The brooding, girl obsessed teenage boy was annoying, but he was supposed to be. I liked that as soon as shit got real he was the protective older brother.

Bryce Howard’s character was awesome and such a relief after how much I hated Julianne Moore’s character from the second one. She was capable, but not to the point where she was great at everything. She knew her weakness and strengths. The fact that she did that all on heels makes her a bit more amazing than Chris Pratt’s character.

Loved the boy’s reaction to Pratt.

The movie was a lot of fun and I’m glad that it made so much money because that means I’m going to get more. They already set up a sequel so some of the work is already done.
